MunLing Shields places essay writing within the larger university experience for students. This book:
- Helps students study more independently and learn more meaningfully to write better essays
- Offers invaluable insights into the way tutors see essays
- Explains why essays are set, and how to understand the rationale behind them
- Demonstrates how best to approach answering the question.
This highly accessible book offers practical, in-depth guidance on each of the stages of the essay writing process - planning, drafting and editing - and relates them to the important sub-skills of information-gathering, reading academic texts, how to get the most out of lectures, referencing and citations, and fluency and appropriateness of style and language.

useful text that details the ins and outs of academic essay writing
This should be read before embarking on a course where written work in essay form is required. A thorough explanation of how to present work and meet requirements.
A very accessible book for students.
An excellent practical guide for students new to essay writing and academic register.
We will be recommending this books to all new students for the coming academic year. Particularly useful are the chapters on introduction and conclusion and the body of the essay. Students find essay writing really daunting especially those who are returning to study after a long break and this book will help them to understand what they need to do.
A little long, but a valuable guide neverthess, and would be best used over an extended period of improvement in essay writing. I was pleased to see a section on essay structure, including structuring of paragraphs, which quite a few of our students find problematical. I liked too the short section giving some of the most common mistakes in use of English - I would add incomplete sentences and confusion of although/however to the list.
